Super Dimension Fortress Macross volume 3 (Eps. 10-12)
By Joseph (Joe) Wood 9th May 05 Super Dimension Fortress Macross volume three contains another four episodes of this classic science-fiction anime. The volume starts with the “Miss Macross” competition. As the Macross is closer to home than ever having recently passed Mars, and has so far beaten of the mysterious Zentradi aliens who have been pursuing them. The decision is made to hold a beauty contest to test the new Macross Broadcasting System. Minmay enters the contest in hopes of wining. The adverts are picked up by the Zentradi, who send a team to go and record the broadcast. The Zentradi are shocked by the pictures they see of men and women on the same ship and dazzled by the “skimpy” clothing and swimsuits. The scout ship is detected and Hikaru is sent out to investigate it, thus having to miss the contest. The Zentradi manage to escape but there recordings are lost due to the fight with Hikaru and they go back to try and explain their findings. In the next episode the Zentradi decide to capture some humans to study after the report made by the three scouts Roli, Konda and Warera. Damaging the Macross’ long-range radar in an attack the Zentradi succeed in capturing Misa, Hikaru and Kakizaki on board a Zentradi vessel. Max is also on the vessel in his Valkyrie hiding when the Zentradi ship folds into hyperspace to arrive at the Zentradi’s home. Here our hero’s see the true extent of the Zentradi’s military power and a questioned on their reason for becoming miclones (what a human sized Zentradi is called) by the Supreme Commander Bodolzaa. Bodolzaa discovers that the humans have Protoculture something the Zentradi lost along time ago. He decides to plant some miclone Zentradi on the Macross as spies, the three Zentradi who had seen the Miss Macross contest volunteer. Meanwhile Max steals a Zentradi’s uniform and tries to rescue his comrades who are also working on an escape plan. They climb onto a ship in hopes that it will go back to where the Macross is, this is also the same ship that is carrying the Zentradi spies. The third volume of Macross is the most exciting yet, we finally get to learn more about the Zentradi, and this also includes the first direct contact between Zentradi and humans. Also in this volume we get another taste of Minmay’s singing and we here the song “My Boyfriend is a Pilot” for the first time (and certainly not for the last). The third volume of Macross will keep fans of the previous two volumes busy for a few hours and is a classic that will never go out of fashion.
