Adventures Of Mini-Goddess Volume 4: The Skuld Files

This series was one of many to be delayed by a fire at MVM's DVD warehouse, meaning that this finale has been a long time in coming. The continuing adventures of Belldandy, Urd, Skuld and Gan-Chan have always been slightly hit-and-miss for me, and this latest volume follows that trend. But it still has a few gems with which to amuse and manages to close off this series amiably enough. And for all those 'Ah! My Goddess' fans out there I am sure you have been waiting for this show with a great deal of anticipation! So are you all ready for more fun and larks with several three inch tall goddess' and their much put upon rat buddy!

These episodes may be short and sweet, but in many ways they try to make up for the lacking quality by delivering in quantity! Many of these episodes are far too familiar from earlier volumes with either another desperate attempt to help Gan-Chan find love, or yet more crazy adventures or pastiches of famous films and shows! These plots have already been done several times before, and they have run their course, which leaves much of this volume feeling very weak. This show does have its moments though, and this volume is non different - be it an episode where this quartet need to deal with being left without a script and have to quickly set up a sci-fi space opera, or the episode where Urd and Skuld manipulate Gan-Chan into believing that he is a clone! But these episodes are the exception rather than the rule, and I found the majority of this volume quite boring!

One of the problems of this show has been the fact that it seems so repetitive, so much so that if you have bought one volume of this show you would have little reason to get any of the others. My ignorance when it comes to 'Mini-Goddess' parent show 'Ah! My Goddess' may very well impair my enjoyment of this show. Perhaps this volume suffers unduly as by this point the show really did need to be doing something new, but instead it limps to a disappointing end just keeping to same formula of the rest of the series. Whatever the reason this volume is little more than average and is only really for the die-hard fans amongst you!
