The Animatrix: Program
By Lyndonimus 26th Apr 04 Program is a side story within the Matrix that has no bearing on the overall plot of The Matrix: Reloaded. The story centres on to characters training in a Program. It is based in feudal Japan where the antagonist and protagonist are kitted out like 16th century Samurai. Within these 10 minutes we are treated to some real eye candy that fans of 'Ninja Scroll' will be delighted to see (as it is directed by the same person). This is a fast paced action piece as the two friends' duel within the Matrix. We are even treated to some '2D bullet time', indeed this work is truly amazing and a grand achievement for 2D animation as a whole, while it is true there are some slight uses of 3D animation it does not overbear upon the 2D work. As with all episodes of The Animatrix there is a slight twist at the end, but it's nothing overly elaborate, just kinda cool really. But the plot is not what this piece is about, it is focused on the action, the kind of action that can only take place in the Matrix. Samurai swordplay whilst being able to defy gravity. need I say more? In the end we realise that the whole thing was just an elaborate test used to test several personality traits (read: can be trusted). It is indeed an interesting concept that will raise some questions among fans, but myself choose to just enjoy the elaborate swordplay as I have racked my brain far too much as to finding out 'what is the Matrix?.
