By Section9 7th Jul 06 Ok...Many times I have passed this title while walking through my favorite comic store, or Best Buy, or Suncoast or any other store that sells anime. In my mind I would always think, "Pshh.. Another wannabe 'Lodoss War,' whatever!" So I would walk away never knowing the true radness, the unbelievable COOLNESS, the, the... ORGASM OF ANIME GOODNESS THAT IS BERSERK! I watched this series about 3 years ago after a friend lent it to me on very high regard. Just recently I purchased it for a very reasonable price from an online retailer: I got the whole 25 episode series for just 57 bucks in the "slimpack" package. To anyone who does not see this anime, I have pity for you. Great dubbing, fantastic visuals, cool characters, wonderful music (especially this one score that is first heard during Guts' and Griffith's first encounter as they walk and talk on the hillside... listen for it) and a story that will have you sitting down to watch the whole thing in one sitting. Never have I seen an anime, or movie, or read a comic book that does what BERSERK does. The first episode sinks it's it's teeth in. Then slowly it releases it's grip, then it comes right back at you and bites even harder, then a nother brief respite until the last disc where it tears you apart limb from limb!!!!!!!! By the end of the story, it's a wonder that the production studio hasn't made another season following the exploits of the comic (Speaking of which, if you have the pleasure of reading the book [put out by DARKHORSE in the states] and then watch the anime you'll notice that many shots in the animated series perfectly reflect the book. Great continuity from the producers and director). You see, because just as the anime ends, that's when things get super-liscious-finger-lickin'-good. Talk about a cliffhanger!!! In my honest opinion if you are going to watch this series then start with episode 2, and after episode 25 go back and watch number 1. It helps ease the pain of being left with that uneasy feeling in your stomach. And you WILL feel uneasy, guarenteed. I walked away feeling angry, sad, and upset...then the memory of episode 1 crept into my brain, and I felt a little better. Or watch it the way the story unfolds, but never forget to remember back to episode 1!!! All in all, I rank BERSERK next to other greats like Cowboy Bebop, G.I.T.S., Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lodoss War, and ROBOTECH/Macross. Definatley gets an A+ for everything it does naturally, as well as one of the BEST UNEXPECTED PLOT TWISTS EVER!! WATCH THIS SERIES OR DIE A LONLELY AND SADDENED MAN (or woman)!!!
