Burst Angel Volume 3: East Meets West
By otaku_kei 15th May 06 A lot of the shows that I have been reviewing lately have fallen into the 'girls with guns' catagory. Recently having just marathoned Kiddy Grade and Noir, as wel as the review titles of Gunslinger Girl and Burst Angel there has been a lot of time to watch kick-ass ladies shoot up everything that comes their way. Well Burst Angel is back for more time with scantily clad, buxom ladies whom I would never consider getting on the wrong side of! So with girls, guns, monsters and an evil police state Jo, Sei, Meg and Amy are back on your screens once again to rock your world! These episodes have a lot to offer, from Sei's arranged marriage going disastrously wrong, and Amy's image being illicitly used by an unknown hacker group, and then a giant robot raging out of control when the girls take a road trip to Osaka! Lots of action, and lashings of fan service delivering all the fun and thrills that we have come to expect from this show. But with these episodes we are starting to see the show building towards these episodic tales into a show with a definite story arc concerned with the underlying threat of RAFT! But just who does this show appeal to? Well it is certainly not anybody after a cerebral, thought provoking time, or an audience looking for what they are watching to break new ground! Burst Angel works so well because it knows exactly what it is trying to do - entertain the audience! This show relies on the very pretty character designs, inter character banter, and the big action set-pieces to keep the audience coming back for more. It is light-hearted for the most part, and whilst not suitable for a very young audience there is little here that could offend anyone. So if you are after girls, guns, giant robots and cute character designs then this show could very well be for you. Fans of Kiddy Grade are sure to feel at home with this title, although it is yet to be proved whether Burst Angel can provide as much gratuitous fun as Gonzo studios previous effort. For anyone who finds the girls with guns genre not to their taste this show is not going to change your mind, but I will say that you are missing out on one of the most harmlessly fun titles currently on the market!
R2 DVD Notes
Features: English Language 5.1; Japanese Language 5.1; English Subtitles; Radio Drama; Textless Opening & Closing; Commentary Track by Chris Bevin (Voice Director), Alison Redslough (Amy) & Greg Ayres (Kyohei); MVM Trailers
Release information: OUT NOW
Notes: Once again the main extra on offer here is the commentary track where the Voice Director and a couple of the VA's just have a lot of fun ripping into the show, and making fun of the scenes that are ridiculous. There is clearly a lot of love for the show from these talents but they are clearly aware of the silliness of some of the on screen action.
The rest of the extras are little more than filler material, but serve to enhance what is already an enjoyable show!
