Burst Angel Volume 5: Line In The Sand
By otaku_kei 26th Aug 06 Gonzo studios Burst Angel returns for its latest volume as Jo, Sei, Meg and Amy continue their never ending battle against evil, injustice and modesty! So expect more in the ways of explosions, robots, explosions, breasts, legs, robots, breasts, explosions... you get the idea! This show has never been the most cerebral of shows on offer and this latest volume will not present any great stress to your grey matter, once again we simply get more of the same as Jo spends her time blowing up evil villains with ominous green brains, and making sure that her friends remain out of trouble! Across these four episodes Jo has to contend with a lot of threats to those people she cares about. From a rampaging war-bot that has somehow been sucked back to feudal Japan with her, through to the reappearance of Kyo's old school buddy who is now a cybernetic mob hitman, even up to out of control traffic robots that have targeted Takane on her visit to Tokyo! Just what is a girl to do? Well if you are Jo, you get ahold of the biggest possible gun you can find, and blow things up! I really wish I could get enthused about this show, but the predictability and growing creative malaise is damaging this show considerably. Sure, it turns out that this volume never sees Meg imperilled, but that simply means Kyo and Takane have to take her place. The development impasse that has stalled the plot is also frustrating for the audience as it is quite clear that the Raft forces are the root of all this evil, and yet still at volume 5 Burst Angel is beating around the bush. Really the only positive that Burst Angel has consistently had going for it have been the lush visuals in every episode. I know that as a Gonzo studios production good animation should really come as standard but it is nice to see that Burst Angel is still getting it all right. Burst Angel volume 5 will continue to entertain those whom have been enjoying the show so far, and I have to say I did like this latest volume, but as this show draws closer to the conclusion it is clear that there has been a lot of heel dragging when it come to the plot and pacing of the show. Nobody has been sitting down to watch Burst Angel thinking that they are in for an intellectual, thought provoking drama, so if all you are after is pretty anime girls in skimpy clothes blowing things up then Burst Angel is right up your alley!

Notes: Burst Angel volume 5 looks and sounds very good. The A/V quality is superb and manages to show off how good this show looks. We also get a wealth of extras to peruse after the main show. First up is yet another commentary track where the girls get to talk and joke about the show. We also get quite a lot of Japanese extras ported over with this release that fill more details about the show.
