Excel Saga
By Joseph Wood 28th Apr 04 If you got to your nearest DVD store with a small selection of anime titles, and you see Excel Saga, pick it up read the back of the DVD box and your already in stiches on the floor. It's almost impossible to prove how funny Excel Saga is, but if you've ever seen any Anime your bound to get some of the parodies and reference points, even if you've never seen Anime your still going to be laughing. Ok the plot...there is one somewhere I swear. The organazation ACROSS is ploting to take over the city as a first step to world domination, it's grand total of members 4. Excel, Hyatt, Menchi and the wonderours Lord Il Palazzo! However a city offical learns of this, and sets up a team of young people to protect the city from ACROSS, however he seems to forget to tell them that. These include Excel and Hyatt's flat mates, Watanabe, Iwata, Sumiyoshi, Matsuya and the Robomatsu units. Add to that the other crazy charcters such as Nabeshin, Pedro and The Great Will of the Macrocosom...and you be off your rocker. I've only seen the first 21 episodes of Excel Saga as the 6th DVD volume has yet to be realised (March) but it is currently showing at 5:30am friday mornings on Sci-fi. The ADV foot-notes that you can turn on and off offer valuable information on cultural and just general points throught out watching the episodes...although useful they can sometimes mean you have to pause to read them, and they can often cover up most of the screen. As for the episodes out of the first 21 I must say that the weakest shows are the two clip shows eps. 13 and 16(I think). They are enjoyable and funny but, the extended dating game speech from Excel makes ep. 13 the worst. As for the best, my personal fave is the third Robomatsu episode(20). Oh and if anyone can clear this from the piracy warnings at the start of the DVD's I'd be very greatful "Or use of packing as a coster, musical insturment or contraceptive divice". How do you use a DVD box as a insturment 0_0!? 9/10
