Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals
By Eric 28th Apr 04 No, this isn't the crap that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Just what did that movie have to do with our beloved RPG series? NOTHING. Thankfully, this anime movie is much closer to home, with chocobos and swords and magic! Taking place 200 years after the end of Final Fantasy V, the crystals are being stolen by an evil force who wishes to use them to make himself a God. In order to protect the last remaining crystal, the descendant of Bartz (from FFV) heads to the temple. Sadly, he's an old fart and he gets hurt, so he sends his granddaughter, Linaly, to retrieve the crystal. Her friend, Pretz, goes with her because he feels she needs protection, and she does. When the crystal is found, it hides out in Linaly's body so it won't be found by the evil ones! Clever...it hides out right in her butt, too. Quite funny when it lights up. From there, it's all about protecting the crystal, and saving Linaly once it is discovered that she's hiding it. Along the way Pretz and Linaly ally with a Captain of the Tycoon kingdom's air force, a ghost, and a lady pirate. Quite a cast, eh? Don't worry, it makes sense. The voices aren't too bad, and Tenchi Muyo fans will have fun recognizing the voice actors in this movie. The voice of Tenchi does Pretz and the voice of the pirate, Rouge, does Washu. There's more than just those two in there. Music is fairly quiet most of the time, so you don't notice it too much. Art is slightly above average. Action scenes..Well, sadly, until the movie is close to ending, most of the sword action consists of Pretz dashing in, then it cuts to a black screen with a sword slash animation. After that, the scene fades back in and the enemy topples over (sometimes). Granted, sometimes they keep the action in real time and don't use this cheap trick, but you'll still be seeing it more than you'd like. Even if you don't like this movie, you'll probably agree that it's worlds better than "The Spirits Within," proving that you don't need super high-tech graphics to make a good fantasy movie. Take that, Square pictures! 8/10
