Mars Daybreak CD
By David Rasmussen 12th Feb 06 This week seems to be a Mars kind of week, doesn’t it. What with Mars Daybreak & Avenger being reviewed and all (coming shortly), it looks like we’re headed out to the sometimes red planet to see what’s shaking in three reviews I’d like to call (in a rather dubious “honor” of his Goobernator-ness… “Get Yo’ (bleep) To Mars!” week. So, without further ado, it’s time to “Get Yo’ (bleep) To Mars!” with Mars Daybreak Original Soundlog I CD. In this review I open a brand new area of review I haven’t done before, mainly my first reviews of Anime CD which is not something I normally pursue in terms of review. So far I have reviewed Anime, I have reviewed Manga, and I have reviewed video games of all sorts, but when it comes to BGM CD I have… well… not done anything of the sort yet. So, then, how did it come to pass that I would finally start reviewing CD content? BANDAI is to thank for that expansion of my horizons since they introduced me to two CD for review… this one, and GITS : SAC’s CD which I will review next week. I’ll see if I can expand that in the near future and do some more CD reviews, by the way, just so you know. Back to Mars Daybreak CD. When I was working on a particular format for this review I approached how I would… well, you’ll see that for yourself. Prep Work (Mars Daybreak CD) Mars Daybreak Original Soundlog I sports a hefty number of tracks (37 in all), with a time of… hmm… I’d say about 40 or so minutes of audio play. A pretty nicely packed CD if I did say so myself. As for the feel of the music to come? Guess only flipping it in and going through first spin will reveal that. If you read the booklet that comes with the CD you’ll find an interesting quote from Director Kumihiro Mori about the music and why they went with that music… of course I’ll leave that for you to read. Time to spin the platter and see what’s what. As I spin it, laying back to absorb it in, I begin to lay out my thoughts on the soundtrack. Hmmm…. I have to say the soundtrack got that upbeat feel to it. Everything is pretty moving, even when the music is lowkey for a dramatic or love scene. Very snappy, very moving, very good. For my first exposure to the soundtrack I have to say I found the music to be pretty good listening, and I could even fall asleep to this mind you. Of course that does not mean a bad thing from my POV, since, well… I’m just saying I need to squeeze as much reviewing time as possible in so I sort of do my CD reviews while… sleeping. Yeah, I’m up long enough to do the reviewing, promise. The write up can wait until the next day, of course, since I don’t write while I sleep very well. Since this isn‘t a review of the DVD I can‘t tell you here how it matched up with the series itself, that‘s for the first DVD Review, but right off the bat I can tell you that I liked what I heard. Just being exposed to the music first, without seeing the series beforehand, gave me hope that I will find the series enjoyable. In fact I think I will have good things to say in my first DVD review, coming up shortly. So we can get to it let’s get to the breakdown, so I can get to the DVD review for you ASAP. Mars Daybreak Original Soundlog I Breakdown What’s Hot? I liked it. I didn’t think I would like doing CD reviews, but after reviewing this I found I liked the CD (and I liked doing the review). If you are a fan of the series then you know you’d want the soundtrack, and I think it’s a good enough listen to in my newbie opinion. Yeah, I’m only just starting my reviewing practices for CD reviews, but I think I got enough of a grasp to know what I like and what I don’t like… and I like this. I think I’m going to keep this CD reviewing up, and try to pick up some CD stuff during the year for more reviews. If the experience is as good as reviewing Mars Daybreak Original Soundlog I then I’m going to like this new tangent of my reviewing duties. What’s Not? Nothing. It’s a CD with soundtrack music. You can’t go wrong there. Sound of the Good The tracks are all good and I can’t think of a bad track in the whole batch. Sound of the Bad Too bad the spoken stuff is all in Japanese. I guess this would be great and all if you know Japanese, or are studying Japanese… but since that doesn’t cover me in either case it’s… well, it’s not good. Sound of the Ugly Nothing. Overall? As far as my first spin doing CD reviews I think this is a good pick-up, and if you are already a fan of Mars Daybreak then you should have this on your list of things to own. Solid music that has a good beat and you can fall asleep to it… which, again, is a good thing (I assure you) then you got yourself nice music. No, the music isn’t a cure for insomnia or something! You can listen to it in the car without worrying about falling into the land of nod between here and there, it’s just that I do my reviewing at night and… well… it fits into my reviewing schedule to do it while I sleep! Anyway recommended spin for your player if you are a fan of the series, so check it out (you won’t be disappointed).
