Ninja Scroll

Ninja Scroll, widely regarded as a classic anime tale of demons, death and, well, ninjas. But is it just an old-school story that relies on its reputation, or a truly engaging hack and slash adventure that has stood the test of time? And is it better than Samurai Jack?!

Being an entirely original creation (as opposed to the large section of popular anime that stems from manga) the film takes its influences from its contemporaries (Akira springs to mind), manga and old Japanese folk stories centred on extraordinary warriors and their battles with creatures from hell. Unlike others, the supernatural elements don't overrun the story, being hinted at and only fully revealed when the plot requires it. In feudal Japan, a lonesome vagabond named Jubei is recruited to help shady government officials investigate and stop a strange and potentially unstoppable menace - I still can't believe that shady government officials existed as far back as then!

This is one of those films that have set a standard for the others to follow. Rather than relying on the stereotypical good guy who is completely honest, Jubei is that coolest kind of protagonist, a reluctant hero with awesome fighting abilities. Working in conjunction with Kagero, a ninja whose touch brings certain death, and an old ninja working on behalf of the government (in a similar vein to Yoda in the Star Wars saga), they set out to confront eight evil demons, each possessing other-worldly powers that put Jubei to the test. While there are only a small number of leading characters, they are nonetheless compelling and worthwhile. The secondary characters, though, are also well created, making everyone realistic. Just watch the way the clan leaders act, controlled by their desires to lead and become powerful.

One of the most important factors in this kind of film is the quality of the fighting. Luckily, due to its impressive budget, Ninja Scroll packs an almighty punch with its fluid, elegant animation and inventive fight sequences the battle between Jubei and the first of the eight demons is truly unique: exotic weapons and unorthodox fighting moves are commonplace in this fight, as well as throughout the film.

For all of its efforts, it still has its shortcomings. The down-tempo feel that gives the film its mood also makes it a sombre affair watching it, with a complete lack of humour. While some would call this consistency, I would call it over-bearing. The sheer amount of blood may also off-put some viewers, but then, it has been given an appropriate 18 rating. However, these points are negative in my opinion; they may not be a problem with yourself. Ninja Scroll is an anime that immerses you in Jubei's quest, replete with mature themes such as revenge and honour. Among the many light-hearted choices out there such as Samurai Jack, this is a classy option for people looking for something a bit less "throwaway". This is something that precedes its reputation.

Besides, how could a film with demons, samurai swords and revenge not be good?

This review relates to the dubbed version.

9/10
