R.O.D. The TV Series Volume 6: The End Of A Dream
By otaku_kei 1st Jun 06 Since R.O.D. The TV Series started getting released in the UK, it has quickly become my favourite show for sitting back and watching. The mix of character stories, and high international intrigue makes for some really exciting onscreen action. For fans of the OAV R.O.D. this show continues the fine form on display there, with many of the characters from the OAV returning for the TV series. It would be nice to see the manga and novels of the R.O D. universe make their way across the pond so that all aspects of this story can be told, but that is merely a hope for the future. For now, lets get back into one of the finest shows that you can buy at a shop near you now! This volume starts with the fallout from the closing scenes of the last volume though. Anita is left adrift in her world by the fact that everyone that she cared for has been killed in a tragic helicopter explosion. With only Yomiko and Anita surviving, this young girl struck out on her own to try and recapture the happiness that she had found in her days in Tokyo. But Mr Joker and the British Library are not content to leave the young girl alone, and their presence and involvement quickly becomes a thorn in the side for this young Paper Master. Can Anita and Yomiko take the fight back to Mr Joker, and subvert the world changing plans of the British Library? Well we get a bit of roller coaster show in this volume. From all the troubles that Anita and Yomiko are first faced with, then their resolve to take on the British Library. But the story doesn't stop there as Mr Joker pulls out some rather nasty revelations about the true relationship that the Three Sisters share. How will Anita cope with this new information? How will this affect their plans to stop the British Library? And of course there are revelations about the other characters as well who may not be quite as dead as we were led to believe... It is these characters that make R.O.D. The TV such a good show. Anita has long been a favourite of mine, along with Maggie and Nenene, but how each of the central characters have grown, changed and matured across this show demonstrates just how good character driven shows can be. Yes the action is hugely enjoyable, and I especially like the anti-paper master tactics that the British Library employs, but the action is the icing on a very splendid cake. So much in this show is conveyed by a sideward glance, the words not said as we have come to know these characters. Wendy is one such character: how much does she believe in what Mr Joker is planning, or are her actions based on a strong personal loyalty to a man whom she now finds herself questioning. There appears to be a lot of emotions and thoughts bubbling under the surface of this show, and that is what truly sets this show apart from the rest of the pack! With only one volume left of this show, I can foresee an explosive climax to R.O.D The TV! The girls still have to be reunited, Junior has been recaptured and his immediate future looks pretty bleak, and the British Library still has some rather dastardly plans in store for the future of the world. Sometimes there are shows that you are left feeling have not left themselves enough time to satisfactorily conclude the series, but with the quality displayed throughout R.O.D. The TV, I am sure that 3 episodes will be enough time to wind up all the loose ends and still deliver an exciting conclusion to the proceedings!

Notes: This is what we like to see on our anime shows: more commentaries. As always with the Actor Commentaries its more about the actors just bouncing off of one another whilst watching one of the episodes from the show. These are a lot of fun to watch even if the commentary track on this disc is a bit childish (the oldest VA on offer is 15!). The rest of the extras are exactly what we have come to expect from UK anime releases.
As always this volume exudes the quality that MVM put into their releases, and the penultimate volume of R.O.D. The TV gets no complaints from me!
