21st May 04 This is what set the standard for anime in the US. No other anime series has achieved as much recognition or popularity as Robotech. Robotech wrote the book on transformable mecha and storytelling. Robotech chronicles the events of several generations of people after the crash landing of a gigantic alien spaceship in 1999. The Earth's people band together and restore the ship after 10 years of work. However, this ship is pursued by all sorts of people, for many reasons. The 1st to show up are the Zentradi, a race of giants bred by their masters for the exclusive purpose of war. As the show goes on, more and more people come to Earth looking for the ship, and trust me, they aren't friendly. I think that should be enough to get you interested, without giving away the whole story. It's a very complex story and you won't find out who's to blame for the whole interstellar war until season 2. Even if you aren't an anime fan, you should see Robotech at all costs. I don't know a single person who's seen it and hasn't fell in love with it after watching the 1st season, and asked me if they could buy my copy. This series is divided into 3 seasons, the Macross Saga, the Masters, and the New Generation, BUT BE WARNED: there are a ton of movies based on this series, avoid the movie versions at all costs, they're crap, and they're basically just crappy rewritings of various segments of the series anyway! Ratings: Story: 10+ (It keeps ya guessing right up to the end.) Mecha: 10 (It was the 1st mecha anime show in history! All of the designs are truly original.) Character development: 10 (Everybody is linked to everybody else in some way.) Animation Quality: 7 (I'm sorry to say that due to the show being 20 years old the animation is rather old and inconsistent when compared to anime shows from today, but don't let this stop you from watching it. When you get involved in the story you'll forget all about this minor detail!) Now get out there and watch Robotech damn it! 9/10
