Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie
By Eric 23rd May 04 Yup, Sonic is an anime. Before thinking about buying this, forget everything you ever saw in the TV shows. There's no knothole or Uncle Chuck, and Robotropolis exists under the planet's core. Heck, they don't even live on Mobius! Before you Sonic fans declare this sacrilege and cast it into the fire, I ask that you give Sonic a chance to expand and try something new. It's really not a bad movie. In this movie, Robotnik convinces Sonic to go down to Robotropolis to run out Metal Robotnik, who is running Robotropolis's generator so much that the excess energy may destroy the world. Wait..did I say Robotnik convinced him? Haha. Sonic just wants to impress the president's daughter with an act of heroism. It's a little lame, but this is Sonic. He's a reckless guy. From here, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles must stop Metal Robotnik, and eventually Metal Sonic (who can beat the real Sonic around like a 4 year old in K-mart). Any more details would contain spoilers, but I will say that it all ties together. Good points? The new-age techno music was surprisingly appropriate for this movie, and Sonic's confrontations with Metal Sonic are truly action packed. Bad points? A few. The art is middle of the road, and the voices are awful. The president's daughter also has the potential to be really annoying, but she doesn't have enough screen time to really start working your last nerve. Wise move. It's not the same Sonic you're used to, but go ahead and give it a shot. It's not about to become a classic, but it's worth seeing. 8/10
