The Super Milk-Chan Show: Volume 2 "Milkshake"

The super slobbering, super cute, super abusive super hero is back for another rent dodging, sushi eating adventure.

Like the previous volume you get two DVDs one containing the original Japanese episodes in either English dub or sub, and a version with an amended script with live action “behind the scenes” at ADV studios.

Again the original version is a lot quieter and full of Japanese references, and the amended version being full of American references. This does not stop Super Milk Chan making you laugh out loud at the situations faced by Milk and company. The President has trouble with a certain “Russian torture device” and is also abducted by aliens, whilst Milk has to help a bunch of homeless hobos in between watching TV and playing dating sims. Either version is bound to make you laugh, however I suggest you watch the Japanese version first due to the American version being a lot louder and often funnier to a western audience.

The first thing many will notice about Milk Chan is its style of animation, the characters are simply drawn and movement would rarely seem like a stretch for seasoned animators. It seems very much like something you might see on a young children’s channel, yet the style is distinctively Japanese. Yet this is merely a cover as if you go into Milk Chan’s world expecting a friendly family jaunt, then your likely to be shocked. Milk is a highly abusive little five years old, with a bad temper and a worse attitude. She is also a super hero called on by the bumbling President to solve the countries problems, most of which are caused by the president himself! Along with your additional cast of an alcoholic slug, a worrying robot guardian, a peeing robotic dog and the mad scientist that created it all add up to a hilarious outing.

Add to this live action sequences involving the actors. Although while in the first volume of Milk Chan the original Japanese version featured quite a few of these there is significantly less this time. The American version has about the same, as the first volume where cast members are all caught in a storm and get locked in the ADV studios. This is fairly funny although nowhere near as good as the anime sections, and requires a little knowledge of some of the voice actors and of the previous live action events in the first volume of Milk Chan.

The second volume of Super Milk Chan is certainly worth buying if you enjoyed the first one, however for those that didn’t the second volume is more of the same and well worth a miss.

R1 DVD Notes

Anime review DVD cover

Features: Disc 1: English language, Traillers, Cast Q+A Disc 2: English dub, Japanese with English subtitles, Clean opening and closing animation.

Release information: Publisher: ADV Released: Tuesday, August 31, 2004 Director(s): Kiyohiro Ohmori, Hideyuki Tanaka

Notes: The DVD extras are pretty much ADV standard with the exception of the Cast Q+A where the English vocal cast are asked things like "what's your faveourite swear word". Dissapointingly there is no audio commentary track, as the one featyred in volume one was extremly good.
