The Super Milk-Chan Show: Volume 3 "Crying Over Spilt Milk"
By Joseph (Joe) Wood 8th Aug 05 You are in trouble and Batman, Spiderman and the X-men are too busy making their next $20million blockbuster to help you out, well don’t call for the help of Super Milk Chan either as she’ll be too busy watching TV. Like the previous volumes of the Super Milk Chan Show, the third volume contains two discs, one with the episodes as shown in Japan and another with edited dialogue and live action sequences from the people at ADV. On the American version, we find that the sound engineer has lost the sound effects for one of the upcoming episodes of the show, meaning that the entire vocal cast have to lend their vocal talents to sound effects, such as doors opening, cats, and elephants and well you’ll just have to see. Meanwhile the President orders Milk-Chan and friends to hunt down a pair of pigs who have escaped the Gentucky pig leg factory and plan on defecting to another country, something Milk intends to do straight away as soon as there’s something bad on TV. Milk literally has egg on her face when the president orders her to find a missing T-rex egg, and his missing pussy…cat. Things get weirder still when colours begin to miss match and strange little characters start appearing in people’s eyes. The Japanese episodes use the exact same animation, and unlike some of the early volumes the stories don’t seem to differ that much. However, there are some differences in that most of the reference jokes to American celebrities are made to Japanese celebrities, and the sound effects episode is done but only by two of the actors (Milk and the President). There is a few other Japanese live action sequences, however nowhere near as many as those in the American version are are. The same problems hold for this volume as did the previous two, if you watch the American version first, there’s very little reason for you to watch the Japanese disc. If you watch the Japanese disc, first the only reason for watching the American disc is the live action segments that break up the episodes of Milk-Chan, unfortunately these are not anywhere near as funny as the actual episodes (and the live action segments on this volume are some of the weakest so far). There are a few laughs to be had, but most are inside jokes, and you’ll have had to seen the previous volumes of Milk-Chan or at least listened to some of ADV’s audio commentaries on other titles. Milk-Chan is certainly a laugh while it’s playing however when watching it a second, or more times it wears a little thin. If you’ve enjoyed the previous volumes then you’ll certainly enjoy this, if you haven’t thought Milk-Chan to be anything special then you’d better give the rest of it a miss as there is very little in this volume that will make you change your mind.

Notes: The location shots are not what you might think, they are the places that feature behind the president when we see in his office such as a pre 9/11 New York, India, Thailand and many other places. The lack of deccent extras is worrying as the first volumes audio commentary was really funny.
