Known to few, there exists a dimension beyond our world called the Black World, a realm where mutants dwell. The human world has established a pact with the Black World, but some do not want there to be peace between the two. Now, a new treaty between the two worlds is about to be signed and a militia from the Black World will stop at nothing to make sure this does not take place.

So who are you going to call to deal with a parellel universe militia? Enter Taki, a cop from the human world and Makie, a cop from the Black World. These two cops are assigned to protect Miyart, the man who did negotiations with the last treaty and plays an important role in the signing of the new treaty. However, Mr. Miyart has become old and perverted. He constantly requests to go to bath houses and strip joints, which the two inter-dimensional cop duo refuse while protecting him. This causes Miyart to wander off on his own, making even more trouble for Taki and Makie to deal with.

This film was directed by Yoshiyaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Bio Hunter) and if you're familiar with his work, this shouldn't be too much of a surprise for you. The action is surreal and very violent at times as the enemies from the Black World have all kinds of powers such as making earthquakes or turning into spiders. Makie's power seems to be the most weak as she can only grow her fingernails, but she does do a lot of damage with them. There is also no limit to how far the fights can show such as when Taki rams his fist all the way through a Black World agent's face until his eyes pop out.

If you have watched some of Kawajiri's works, then you must also know that there is some sex involved. Well, there is a lot of sex in this particular film. Not very detailed, but still enough to make you avert children's eyes from. However, the majority of the adult situations usually tie into the plot. The opening scene features Taki getting into bed with woman he met at the bar. Later on in bed, her arms and legs begin to grow as she transforms into a spider and threatens Taki to stay away from the Black World, as she is one of the members of the hostile militia. She also appears again later on, but I won't get into that.

The character development is one of the film's strong points. Taki is a little freaked out by the Black World hostiles, but can still manage to stay cool in the face of danger. Makie's character is a bit hard to identify with. She puts on a tough girl routine, but most of the time ends up losing a fight and getting raped by the enemy. It feels much like a stereotypical role for a female, but that's really for the audiance to deduce for themselves. Miyart's character is the comic relief and does a great job at it. Even during his first appearence when Taki and Makie are waiting for him at the airport and spot his plane explode during landing. Miyart then pops up in back of the two stating he was glad he caught an earlier flight and gets straight to sexually harrassing Makie. Even when he is begging to go to sexual establishments, he can can still make you grin.

Now for all you parents out there. If your kids are under 16, PLEASE do not let them watch this, less you complain. It is not that Wicked City is a hentai, but more of an adult action thriller. Part of being an adult means you can understand the concepts of violence, sex and crude language. Children don't and will see Wicked City as a porno thriller, so it's best not to let juvenile minds witness the movie.

If you can get past how much sex there is (about 7 situations), Wicked City is an entertaining action movie that also has some shreds of comedy mixed into it. The ending is also very upbeat for such a dark story. I would recommend watching this title if you are simply bored with the gun-and-explosion type action films that saturate the entertainment industry. Simply put, it's an action film that appeals to your imagination.

7/10
