Worms 4: Mayhem
By Joseph (Joe) Wood 17th Sep 05 The latest version of the Worms brand Worms 4: Mayhem is in reality the eighth game in the series and its third 3d game after Worms 3d and Worms Forts. Since the early 1990’s, when Worms first wriggled on the gaming community they offered a unique multiplayer experience. A 2d turn based strategy game where players take turns to blow up each others worms with a huge array of weaponry, bazookas, grenades, air strikes and sheep amongst others both mundane and surreal. When Worms 3d was released a couple of years ago many saw that waiting for Team 17 to make their first 3d worms was well worth it, even though many said they preferred the 2d games more. Worms Forts on the other hand was not received as well as its predecessor, having to build forts and destroy your opponents at the same, time took away the quick pick up and play factor of the previous titles. Mayhem thankfully drops this feature and returns to the classic gameplay Worms is known for. Most of the Worms’ games have given players a number of voices for their Worms, a number of different graves for when your worm pops it, a team flag and victory theme. Mayhem takes this a little further by offering players the chance to change the appearance of their worms and make their own weapons. Players can place hats, eyes/glasses, moustaches and hands on their worms to make them unique to the player, this is great idea as it is certain to minimize the amount of “Oh I thought that was your worm!” accidents, new clothes and accessories (and other things) can be bought from the Shop with coins got from the single player mode. Making new weapons is also simple, you can pick from a shooting weapon, thrown weapon or an air strike, there are several options such as the ability to make shots poisonous or cluster bombs. In addition, the game makes sure that a weapon is not too powerful, by giving you a limit meter, if the meter goes into the red your weapon is too powerful and you won’t be allowed to make it. There are a number of single player options, the “story” mode offers players a nice range of missions to take on capturing crates or taking out the landscape puncture the simple kill the enemy missions. The challenge mode gives players a change to improve their skills with weapons and utilities such as the ninja rope. But it’s the multiplayer where the real fun lies, standard death matches can be different every time thanks to a random level generator and extra gaming options such as double damage or mines that respawn in the same location after blowing. There are a number of different game modes, one where you have to destroy your enemies statues while defending your own, or where players have to destroy the enemy’s base. The graphics are bright and colourful, just what you’d expect from a worms game, the music isn’t great but you can fortunately turn it off. The worms are as cheeky as ever with their comebacks and insults, which will bring a few laughs, but do begin to wear thin after awhile. Worms 3d did suffer from camera problems and Mayhem hasn’t sorted these out, the camera will still automatically position it’s self so you can’t see where your worm is. Also, the random level generator doesn’t seem as random as Worms 3d’s. In Worms 3d, the level offered a number of different levels often floating in space separated by air and the ocean below. In Mayhem, however it seems that there has to be a floor wherever there’s land, although these are sometimes separated into islands, it feels confined. Despite it’s problems Worms 4 is certainly well worth getting if you’ve do not yet own a 3d worms game (or if you own Forts), if you do have Worms 3d though there may not be enough to warrant you buying Mayhem. Worms 3d is Armageddon and Mayhem is World Party, both games are almost identical but a lot of fun.
