Guilty Gear X2

In all the Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats and Budokais and whatnot, some of the lesser known fighters sometimes get passed up. Sometimes they just aren't found because it's not the kind of game you're guaranteed to find at the store. Why, I even had to find my copy online. It's a shame, really, since this is one of the better fighters to come out for the last few years.

Some of you may remember Guilty Gear X, or maybe even the original Guilty Gear on the PSone. Well, I'm confident in saying that the sequel trumps them both. Four new characters have been added, including a guitar-playing witch, a boy dressed as a girl, a young man possessed by a vengeful spirit, and a stylish vampire. Not only that, but the gameplay itself has received an upsdate. The new burst feature allows you to "burst" your opponent with a surge of power to break out of a combo. Although this feature is the only upgrade, be assured that it totally changes the strategies you'll be using.

However, the best part has to be the new modes. As fans of the series know, the previous titles were woefully lacking extra play modes. Thankfully, they took the time to add them in this time around. Arcade mode, story mode (with 3 endings per character), mission mode, VS mode, and two different survival modes. As if that wasn't enough, you have a gallery which saves all of the artwork and anime clips you unlock over the course of the game. Now that's more like it!

This isn't the easiest game in the world to find, but as 2D fighters go, you couldn't go wrong with this one, and I'm confident in saying that until King of Fighters 2002/2003 and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection come out, I'll be deep in Guilty Gear X2.

Score: 8.75/10
