Gold Digger Pocket Manga Volume 5
By David Rasmussen 14th Apr 07 Ah, another week of Golden Age Gold Digger. And look, I don’t have nearly as much complaints about these reviews as I did with Gold Digger the OAV. Go figure. At the end of the last volume we were halfway through the situation brewing with the Lich King (which was once the beloved father/grandfather of the Diggers). Of course if evil has returned then so too has good (yes), as we also see the return of Mrs. Diggers (Julia) whose been sitting things out for the past some years after being caught in a spell meant for her husband, while protecting her children from the recently Lich-ified Grandpa Diggers. The Lich King is gunning to steal Gina’s body as his own as he is having a bit of a power problem, which apparently has drained his mind since he has no idea what a major unkeep problem he’ll have once he has his change of religions. Anyway (deep breath for a long sentence) I guess he should be happy with losing at the end of this down to the wire finale fight to the finish, mostly since I don’t think his former secretary slash restored Queen of the Vampires would have taught him about the care and maintenance of his new female body. (whew) Remember the leprechauns from last time? Well they’re BACCCCKKKK… why, because they’ve been tricked… I mean conned by Penny again. While out to refresh the home fridge with more tuna, Gina and Britanny is caught by the little folk and put on trial for crimes they kinda sorta committed but… well… OBJECTION!… sorry. Anyway this won’t last long and they won’t be in trouble long, almost. Finally a trip to a kinder gentler pre-911 Turkey yields an unexpected “love connection” for Gina, which she has to keep in check, as she runs into rival treasure hunter Ryan Tabbot. Oh, and there’s this whole alien thing going on as well, mostly concerning an alien who wants to go home and call reinforcements to destroy the Earth… bad alien. Sit, stay, speak to Mulder. Breakdown? Sure. But you know what I’m going to say… in fact this is just a lift from Volume 4’s review since I just have the same thing to say again. (shrugs) How many times must I say this is good. It’s good. Another piece of an even dozen books heralding the Golden Age of Gold Digger, it’s drawn well, written well, and is filled with lovable characters and well crafted stories that run like a well written ongoing soap opera which continues to this very day (OBJECTION!). Sure, you could read something worst but you’ll have a hard time finding something better. 5 bowls of Lucky Charms (they’re magically delicious) out of 5. Gold Digger © & ™ Fred Perry
