Gold Digger Halloween Special #3
By David Rasmussen 18th Nov 07 It’s Halloween folks! One of the few days of the year where it’s perfectly alright to bribe people with candies and chocolates and not feel guilty about it… now shut up, you talking heads who think everything is a sin! Shove off! Oh, and Halloween is also one of the few nights when that dark shadowy thing going bump in the night isn’t OJ “liberating” more sports memorabilia (allegedly), or yet another cast member of LOST out on a drunken driving spree. OK, technically as I finish this up and submit it it WAS Halloween Eve (but it doesn’t seem to matter as I already saw the first commercial of the Christmas season (by PopTarts)). Still, it’s Halloween eve so let’s browse about and see what Antarctic Press gave out this year that wasn’t, you know, Final Girl. (If you remember my final review of Final Girl I ended up giving that one a 3 out of 5, let’s hope this does better than that.) It’s Halloween, and if it’s Halloween then we’re talking about another Fred Perry and company Halloween special to enjoy. Last year’s one I particularly liked, to the tune of a 5 out of 5. Let’s see if I have the same reaction to this year’s fare… let’s see… Let’s see, two females I know nothing about (because I am so behind on my Gold Digger Series II content) seem to be into female tag team wrassling, and it’s Halloween and costume themes (including a strangely familiar pairing of bunny and duck) is being banded about. Mostly, however, I am sure this is just for the sheer shock value that these two will not be able to go through the rest of their lives without at least one person they know thinking they’re lesbian lovers… meh. On the bright side I have taken my medication so I won’t penalize the title for that one… again. Is it me or is Fred frisky this year? Down, Mr. Perry, down. The second story again has characters that don’t leap to memory fighting a giant squid in costume… things will happen and regrets will be made. Oh, and somebody abuses a Wiimote and Nunchuk as never seen before (even worst abuse than the time I reviewed Spider-Man 3 for the Wii). Is it me or is this year just not leaping out at me. It’s good, and I like it, it’s just… I’m not feeling it as well as I did last year. Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s just the fact we’re so far into this short issue before we finally see a substantial bit of content with the Digger Sisters… that’s probably it. In a story that should have been longer (as in a fully developed story), we see Britanny and her girl Tiffany teaming up with a certain somebody from Quagmire and her twin children (are you keeping up with your NHS? I’m falling abit behind… sorry). Sadly this is just a short skit to have Gina barge in and ruin the moment between the two, sad because I am willing to bet we could have seen some real fun once the entire gang got into this whole trick or treating act. Yeah, well I won’t be one to lament lost opportunity, but still the few pages were nice… let’s see who I thank for this… Ben Dunn… of course. Should have guessed with the NHS crossover. Pandora’s Labyrinth, by the person whose Final Girl I just gave the shallow grave treatment (that’d be David Hutchison if you’re keeping track folks). Not good. Gina in a nice costume pin-up, a one pager about the Great… I mean King Pumpkin… don’t they mean Jack Skellington the Pumpkin King? You know, had a movie, a few games, appeared in Kingdom Hearts I, Chain of Memories and II? (But his creator wouldn’t let him appear in Kingdom Hearts the Manga?) You know Jack, right? And that’s it. Wow. That really wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. But I can’t stand NOT giving it a 5 out of 5... I mean it’s still Gold Digger AND I just so happened to have liked it even if it wasn’t as Digger Sisters-centric as last year’s Special!! Can’t… bring… self… to… score… less… than… FIVE!! So I won’t. Simple warning. If you’re just in it for the sisters then you’ll be better off digging up the previous #2 Special, that one will be more satisfying. If you want a Special and don’t mind who is in the Special as long as Fred Perry and the gang is there to entertain you… except you, Hutchison, I didn’t like your story… again… (AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN) -- but I’m not here to give you a hassle about this even if I didn’t like what I got. Don’t worry, Hutchison got a better score from me with Ghost Pirates vs. Ghost Ninjas #1, that I was satisfied with. Maybe it helped that he didn’t write that one though… sorry, I’m being nasty now. I apologize. As I was here, though again I kinda hoped for different content (and less content in a certain area). No GD -18 tale, no GD-Peebo Tales tale, no… well, I still liked it. To the point that, yes, it gets what I promised in the form of a perfect 5 awkward moments between female partners out of 5. OK. Next year I’m expecting more Digger Sisters! Don’t disappoint me! © & ™ 2007 Fred Perry NHS Characters © & ™ 2007 Ben Dunn
