Question. What do you need to qualify as a "Snow White" style title? Let's see… Himeno, our heroine to be, is a high school freshman whose life is not as good as it should be. It all started with the death of her mother, and went downhill from there. How bad, you might ask? Her father has fallen under the power of a "wicked" corporate powerhouse named Natsue who seems to have good ole' dad under her control with a vengeance! Then again if he wasn't such a booze hound he wouldn't have gotten into such dire straits in the first place! Add to that Himeno's two new evil stepsisters and… and you begin to wonder if this shouldn't be "The New Legend of Cinderella" because that's more along the lines of what happened to Cinderella than Snow White! But wait, there's more! One day, on the way to school, she takes a shortcut and ends up being dragged into a fantasy world that just isn't so fantastic these days since it found that it's been put on the Endangered Fantasy World list. Being put on the edge of extinction will do that to a world. The world needs a heroine named "Pretear", and that's where Himeno comes in. After meeting eight… one, two, three… seven plus one… The New Legend of Snow White and the Eight Secondary Characters slash Guardians? Yeah. Now that's not a good thing. Confused? I am. However she's not entirely entranced with the idea of becoming a world savior, and considering how she was just dropped into the "role" I can see her reluctance. In fact she thinks these people (eight of them) who told her this are in some sort of weirdo cult… well, they're not THAT bad, but she doesn't see it that way. She goes back to her own world, but somehow you just know that she can't stay away for long. Her "destiny" is just going to be pulling her back in, and eventually she'll want to be the Pretear… only after quite abit of coaxing and difficulties that is. But then, even after she decides she wants to be the Pretear… what then? And what is the Pretear and what kind of duties must she perform to save this new world she finds herself drawn to? And why is it the New Legend of Snow White when it seems to be more aligned to Cinderella than Snow White?!? Find out how it all begins, and more as you read Pretear GN 1! Now onto the breakdown. Pretear Breakdown the 1st Before we do Pretear's breakdown let's take a closer look at the classes that each review "Breakdown" is broken into. What's Hot? - What's so good about what I just reviewed. What's Not? - What's so NOT good about what I just reviewed. Moments to Remember? - Did I just adore something about this title that makes it stand out in my mind? Here's where I lay down my thoughts on the stand out thing about this title. What to Ignore? - Something happen that made me cringe or just plain want to skip it? Here's where you'll hear about that as well. Overall? - Was it worth the cover price for admission? My final thoughts. Now, that being said, how did Pretear fare? What's Hot? It is good. Despite my grousing I did like some parts of it, others I didn't but still I have to say for a first Graphic Novel it has great potential and something I recommend you check out for yourself. Which, mind you, you can do now if you win our Pretear contest this week! (More info below!) What's Not? I don't know. Simply the fact that it seems more Cinderella-ish than Snow White-ish isn't a good enough excuse for a "Not" here. In that case I'd have to say that… well… at times it drags. That's not a horrible thing, but it's something I noted all the same. Moments to Remember? I seem to remember Himeno's time in the fantasy world more than her dealings with her cold as ice new "family". Watching her interact with people who aren't either difficult to fathom or just plain rude was more memorable than her activities on Earth. What to Ignore? Yes, yes, at first glance Pretear looks more Cinderella than Snow White, right? Ignore that. Not too important. Still, considering it's "Snow White" why is it Himeno gets into situations befitting Cinderella rather than Snow White? (Complete with wicked stepmom slash stepsisters?) I don't know, I just don't know. Overall? Mixed bag. I liked it overall but it dragged a little for me. It's recommended by me nevertheless because it's still a decent enough read, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes with GN 2! Pretear GN 1 is something to give a shot with yourself! Pick it up and try it out!
